The Life-Saving Technology in Your Garage

, federal law has required all garage door openers to include auto-reverse safety features. These systems have prevented countless injuries and saved lives. At Frisco Garage Doors, we take safety seriously.understanding how these systems work helps you maintain them properly and protect your family.

Before these safety requirements, garage door injuries were tragically common. Children and pets were especially vulnerable. Today's safety systems, when properly maintained, make garage doors one of the safest automated systems in your home.

Two Types of Auto-Reverse Systems

Photo-Eye Sensors

These sensors create an invisible beam across your garage door opening, about 6 inches from the floor. When the beam is broken, the door immediately stops and reverses. This system prevents the door from closing on anything in its path.whether it's your child, your pet, or your car.

Photo-eye sensors have small LED lights that indicate their status. Typically, one sensor shows green (sending unit) and one shows amber (receiving unit). When properly aligned, both lights should be solid. Blinking lights indicate misalignment that needs correction.

Pressure-Based Reversal

If the door encounters resistance while closing.such as contacting an object.it should stop and reverse. This is your backup safety system that works even if the photo-eyes fail. The opener's force settings control how much resistance triggers the reversal.

Monthly Safety Tests

Perform these simple tests monthly to ensure your safety systems work. Our maintenance programs include these tests on every visit:

Photo-Eye Test:

  1. Press the wall button to close the door
  2. Wave an object (like a broom handle) through the sensor beam while the door is closing
  3. The door should immediately stop and reverse
  4. If it doesn't, stop using the door and call for service immediately

Pressure Reversal Test:

  1. Place a 2x4 flat on the floor where the door meets the ground
  2. Close the door using the wall button
  3. When the door contacts the 2x4, it should reverse within 2 seconds
  4. If the door doesn't reverse or takes longer than 2 seconds, the force settings need adjustment

Keeping Your Family Safe

In addition to regular testing, teach all family members.especially children.about garage door safety. Children should never play near or under a moving garage door, and never try to "race" under a closing door. Keep the remote controls out of reach of young children.

For comprehensive safety, consider our annual maintenance program. We'll test all safety systems, adjust force settings, and ensure your garage door provides reliable protection for your family throughout the Frisco area.
